Will There Be Any More Jason Bourne Movies?

It has been a decade since Matt Damon last appeared on the big screen as Jason Bourne, but the famous former CIA assassin may not be finished yet. After years of uncertainty surrounding the franchise, recent developments suggest that another Bourne movie is not only possible but is being actively discussed.

There is still no officially announced release date for a new Jason Bourne movie. However, Universal has made a significant long-term commitment to the franchise, while Damon himself has confirmed that he would like to return if the filmmakers can find the right story.

So, will there be another Jason Bourne movie? The short answer is that the chances now look better than they have in years.

Matt Damon is interested in playing Jason Bourne again

The most important development is that Matt Damon has not closed the door on another appearance as Jason Bourne.

During interviews in 2026, Damon made it clear that he and the people behind the franchise continue to discuss ways of bringing Bourne back. He has said that they are always looking for an idea that could justify another installment rather than producing a sequel simply because the character is popular.

More significantly, Damon revealed in July 2026 that he has been talking with director Edward Berger about a potential new Bourne movie. Berger is best known for directing All Quiet on the Western Front, which won four Academy Awards.

According to Damon, the challenge is finding the right story. Unlike James Bond, where each movie can essentially begin with a new mission, the Bourne movies tell a relatively continuous story. Jason Bourne’s identity, his past, his relationship with the CIA and his attempts to escape the world that created him have all developed across several films.

That makes another sequel more complicated.

Damon said that if another movie happens, he wants it to reach the standard of the original Bourne trilogy. He also acknowledged that creating something new without simply repeating previous stories is difficult.

For fans hoping to see him return, that is an encouraging sign. Damon is not simply saying that he would never rule it out. He appears genuinely interested in another movie if the creative team can find a convincing reason for Bourne to come back.

Universal has made a major commitment to the Bourne franchise

Another major development came in August 2025.

NBCUniversal acquired the rights, excluding publishing rights, to Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series in perpetuity. The agreement covers multiple formats, including movies, television and streaming projects.

That is particularly important because it shows that Universal sees Bourne as a franchise with a future rather than simply a collection of older movies.

Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer said the company intends to continue expanding the Bourne universe with new stories for audiences around the world.

Longtime franchise producer Frank Marshall is also expected to continue overseeing future installments alongside Captivate’s Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith. Marshall has been involved with the Bourne movies since the beginning.

The acquisition does not guarantee that the next project will specifically be a Matt Damon-led Bourne 6, but it makes one thing clear: Universal has no intention of abandoning the property.

Future projects could potentially include movies centered on Jason Bourne, other agents connected to Treadstone, television productions, streaming series or entirely new characters within the same universe.

What happened to the previously announced Bourne 6?

Reports of another Bourne movie actually began several years earlier.

In November 2023, Universal was reported to be developing a sixth movie in the franchise, with Edward Berger in discussions to develop and direct it. At the time, there was no completed screenplay and Matt Damon had not officially joined the project.

The project remained uncertain over the following years.

There were even reports suggesting that the movie could be called The Bourne Dilemma, although that title was never officially established as the name of a finished production. Berger himself later expressed uncertainty about whether he would actually direct the film.

That led many fans to assume that the project had quietly disappeared.

The situation became more interesting again in 2026 when Damon specifically mentioned Berger while discussing another Bourne movie. He described Berger as a great director and said that they were talking about the project and trying to work out the story.

Therefore, the Berger version of Bourne may not be as dead as it once appeared.

Still, there is an important difference between filmmakers discussing a project and a studio officially putting a movie into production. As of September 2026, Universal has not announced a release date, production schedule or finalized cast for another Jason Bourne movie.

What happened in the previous Jason Bourne movies?

The franchise began with The Bourne Identity in 2002.

Matt Damon played a man found floating in the Mediterranean Sea with no memory of who he was. He gradually discovered that he was Jason Bourne, a highly trained operative connected to a secret CIA assassination program called Treadstone.

The movie was followed by The Bourne Supremacy in 2004 and The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007.

Together, the three films became one of the most influential action trilogies of the 2000s. Their combination of practical action, international espionage, surveillance and a protagonist attempting to uncover his own past helped reshape the modern spy thriller.

After The Bourne Ultimatum, Damon temporarily left the franchise.

Universal then released The Bourne Legacy in 2012. Rather than replacing Damon directly as Jason Bourne, the movie introduced Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, another operative affected by secret government programs related to the events of the earlier movies.

Damon eventually returned in Jason Bourne in 2016, once again working with director Paul Greengrass.

That remains the most recent Bourne movie.

Could Jeremy Renner return as Aaron Cross?

One of the biggest unanswered questions is whether the franchise could reconnect Jason Bourne with Aaron Cross.

The Bourne Legacy takes place within the same world as the other movies, and Jason Bourne’s actions have consequences for the government programs explored in the film. However, Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner have never appeared together as Bourne and Cross.

A future movie could theoretically change that.

There is currently no official confirmation that Renner is involved with the next project, so any suggestion of a Bourne-Cross team-up remains speculation.

From a storytelling perspective, however, bringing together different parts of the franchise could give Universal a way to expand the series without forcing every future movie to revolve entirely around Bourne’s past.

It could also allow Bourne to occupy a different role. Instead of once again being the agent attempting to discover another hidden chapter of his own history, an older and more experienced Bourne could become involved in a larger conflict surrounding the programs that followed Treadstone.

Could Bourne continue without Matt Damon?

Universal has already demonstrated that the franchise can technically continue without Damon.

The Bourne Legacy did exactly that.

There was also the television series Treadstone, which premiered in 2019 and explored the secret program responsible for creating highly trained operatives. The show was canceled after one season.

Neither project achieved the cultural impact of the Matt Damon films, however.

That creates a challenge for Universal. Jason Bourne is closely associated with Damon, arguably more than many other modern action characters are associated with a single actor.

The studio could introduce another operative rather than recast Bourne. The newly acquired rights to the larger Treadstone universe certainly make that possible.

But if Universal wants another theatrical movie capable of generating significant excitement among longtime fans, bringing Damon back would probably be the most obvious route.

Fortunately for the studio, Damon appears interested.

Why has another Bourne movie taken so long?

The main obstacle does not appear to be a lack of interest.

Instead, the problem is the story.

The original trilogy gave Jason Bourne a powerful narrative arc. He began as a man without memories and gradually uncovered the truth about how he had been recruited, manipulated and transformed into an assassin.

Once that mystery had largely been solved, creating new sequels became more difficult.

The 2016 movie attempted to reveal additional information about Bourne’s father and the circumstances surrounding his recruitment. Another film repeating the same formula — Bourne discovers another government secret connected to his past and is chased across several countries — could easily feel too familiar.

Damon himself has recognized this issue.

In his 2026 comments, he explained that the franchise was not designed like James Bond, where audiences can simply watch the hero receive a new mission every few years. Bourne has a continuous personal story, which limits how many times filmmakers can reopen the same questions.

Finding the solution to that problem may ultimately determine whether another movie gets made.

What could a new Jason Bourne movie be about?

No official plot has been announced.

However, the world has changed considerably since audiences last saw Bourne in 2016, which gives writers plenty of new territory to explore.

Artificial intelligence, biometric identification, facial recognition, autonomous weapons, cyberwarfare and increasingly sophisticated surveillance systems could all fit naturally into the Bourne universe.

Earlier films frequently showed Bourne attempting to disappear while intelligence agencies used cameras, phones, financial records and government databases to locate him.

A modern version of that conflict could be dramatically different.

Jason Bourne was exceptionally good at disappearing in an era when someone could still escape surveillance by changing phones, crossing borders under another identity or avoiding security cameras.

Doing the same thing in a world of AI-powered tracking and interconnected digital systems could be considerably more difficult.

Another possibility would be to move away from Bourne uncovering secrets about himself.

Instead, he could discover that a new generation of operatives is being created using methods derived from Treadstone. Bourne could then become the person trying to prevent others from experiencing what happened to him.

That would preserve the central themes of the franchise while allowing the character to evolve.

Would Paul Greengrass return?

Paul Greengrass is another major part of the Bourne franchise.

He directed The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and Jason Bourne, helping establish the intense visual style most audiences now associate with the series.

Historically, Damon’s participation and Greengrass’ involvement were closely connected. Damon previously indicated that Greengrass was an important reason he returned to the series.

However, recent developments point toward Edward Berger rather than Greengrass as the filmmaker most closely associated with a possible new movie.

That could be beneficial.

If Bourne is going to return after such a long absence, the franchise may need a director who respects what made the earlier films successful while also introducing a different visual and dramatic approach.

Berger’s involvement remains unconfirmed, but Damon’s 2026 comments suggest discussions are continuing.

When could Bourne 6 be released?

There is currently no official release date.

More importantly, there is no public confirmation that filming has been scheduled.

That means fans should be cautious about rumored release dates appearing online. Until Universal formally announces the film, any specific year should be treated as speculation.

Given the current stage of development, a new Jason Bourne movie would still need a completed screenplay, cast agreements, pre-production and filming before reaching theaters.

Damon also remains extremely busy with other major projects, which would need to be considered when scheduling a Bourne production.

For now, the important development is not a release date but the fact that serious discussions about the character are continuing.

So, will there be another Jason Bourne movie?

Another Jason Bourne movie now appears increasingly plausible, but it is not yet officially guaranteed.

There are several strong reasons for optimism. NBCUniversal acquired long-term rights to the entire Bourne and Treadstone universe in 2025 and publicly expressed its intention to develop future stories. Matt Damon said again in 2026 that he wants to make another Bourne film, and he confirmed that discussions involving Edward Berger and potential story ideas have taken place.

What is missing is the final piece: a story convincing enough to bring Jason Bourne back.

That may actually be encouraging for fans. Damon does not appear interested in returning merely for another sequel. He wants a film capable of living up to the reputation of the original trilogy.

If the filmmakers find that story, audiences may indeed hear those famous words again:

Jason Bourne is back.
