It has been a decade since Matt Damon last appeared on the big screen as Jason Bourne, but the famous former CIA assassin may not be finished yet. There is still no officially announced release date for a new Jason Bourne movie. However, Universal has made a significant long-term commitment to the franchise, while Damon himself has confirmed that he would like to return if the filmmakers can find the right story.
So, will there be another Jason Bourne movie? The short answer is that the chances now look better than they have in years.
Matt Damon is interested in playing Jason Bourne again
The most important development is that Matt Damon has not closed the door on another appearance as Jason Bourne.

The acquisition does not guarantee that the next project will specifically be a Matt Damon-led Bourne 6, but it makes one thing clear: Universal has no intention of abandoning the property.
Future projects could potentially include movies centered on Jason Bourne, other agents connected to Treadstone, television productions, streaming series or entirely new characters within the same universe.
What happened to the previously announced Bourne 6?
Reports of another Bourne movie actually began several years earlier.
In November 2023, Universal was reported to be developing a sixth movie in the franchise, with Edward Berger in discussions to develop and direct it. At the time, there was no completed screenplay and Matt Damon had not officially joined the project.

Jason Bourne was exceptionally good at disappearing in an era when someone could still escape surveillance by changing phones, crossing borders under another identity or avoiding security cameras.
Doing the same thing in a world of AI-powered tracking and interconnected digital systems could be considerably more difficult.
Another possibility would be to move away from Bourne uncovering secrets about himself.
Instead, he could discover that a new generation of operatives is being created using methods derived from Treadstone. Bourne could then become the person trying to prevent others from experiencing what happened to him.
That would preserve the central themes of the franchise while allowing the character to evolve.
Would Paul Greengrass return?
Paul Greengrass is another major part of the Bourne franchise.
He directed The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and Jason Bourne, helping establish the intense visual style most audiences now associate with the series.
Historically, Damon’s participation and Greengrass’ involvement were closely connected. Damon previously indicated that Greengrass was an important reason he returned to the series.
